A Happy-Sad Story
When Kati was one year old, the Pohlers came to China from Michigan to
adopt her. Because of the one child policy executed in China at the time,
Kati’s biological parents were forced to make the impossible choice
between abortion and abandonment. The baby was left at a marketplace
near a bridge, with a note holding a message for the adoptive parents. Kati,
who was raised as an all-American girl, knew very little about her
biological parents at this point. Year after year, on July twenty fourth, her
biological father waited on that bridge. Exactly ten years later, an emissary
for the adoptive family came to that location, but didn’t notice him and the
sign he was holding. A TV crew that was on-site did, and so the idea was
born to turn their story into a movie that aired on BBC. Only when she was
twenty years old, the adoptive parents told Kati the whole truth. The
inevitable meeting finally took place on her twenty second birthday.
Despite the concerns and language barrier, this happy-sad circle has
closed.
