Rabies in the North
For months, the local authorities along with farmers and the Nature and
Parks Authority have been fighting the rabies epidemic that is spreading
around Bet She’an and the Gilbo’a. But even they were surprised
yesterday by the announcement that the Ministries of Health and
Agriculture are preparing to execute mass poisonings in order to deal with
the epidemic, poisonings that would cause unprecedented damage to
animals and nature. Today the Minister of Agriculture Uri Ariel
announced that this is an initiative by the Ministry of Health, which his
office isn’t advancing. But unlike what the Minister said, only yesterday
the Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Shlomo Ben Eliyahu,
sent a letter to the director of veterinary services, in which he supports the
recommendation by the Ministry of Health, which fears the disease’s
spreading to the center of Israel, and instructs him to prepare a plan of
action for the poisoning to be ready at any time. At the moment the
spreading of rabies is far from being stopped. Two thousand seventeen has
already broken records with seventy four cases, almost sixty of those in
just the last three months. Rabies is fatal, and hundreds of citizens have
already been required to be vaccinated lately, but authorities continue to
wait for real help on the ground, like added positions for veterinarians and
vaccination campaigns.
