The Young Olympics
Up until a few years ago who even thought that an arena like this, a
skateboard arena, could be one of the Olympics locations. It’s going to
happen, not here in Tel Aviv of course, but in the next Olympics, Tokyo
twenty twenty. No less than five new sports were added to the next
Olympic Games, almost all are developing urban sports identified with this
young crowd. Skateboarding, climbing wall, karate, baseball or softball in
the female version and windsurfing. Now ask why, the Olympics isn’t just
sports, but a financial business in every regard that also needs ratings to
exist. The International Olympic Committee looked at the data and
reached a clear conclusion: the viewers of the Olympics are growing fewer
and mostly older. The skateboard, climbing, surfing, are sports that play
very well on social media, and pull young people to the screen as well.
With the change, the number of sports in the Olympics grew from twenty
eight to thirty three, which also promises fifteen more happy winners of
the gold. What will we see less of? Traditional, classic sports, which don’t
televise as well today, like weight lifting and wrestling. Another promising
change is that we’ll see a lot more women in the Olympics. Now the
Olympic Committee only has to update the slogan: faster, higher, stronger
and cooler.
