Wanting to Build in Qalqilya

Nothing in these quiet empty streets of Qalqilya, noting Ramadan, didn’t
attest today to the political raging storm revolving the city’s expansion and
refuses to die down. The Prime Minister on his part is trying to dull the
criticism; he talks of a little over six thousand Palestinian residential units
that would actually be built. Though it has to be said, if the Palestinians
want to, they would be able to build up to fourteen thousand units. The
Palestinian concern is that Israel will cancel the expansion of the city,
which is suffocated on all sides by the separation fence, and is planned to
be inside the fence anyway. The size of the terrain of quarrel where we
now are is two thousand five hundred dunams, all inside C territory inside
the fence, all private Palestinian lands that surround Qalqilya. The building
potential here is of fourteen thousand residential units. If the plan comes
through, the distance of Qalqilya from the settlement Zofim for instance,
would be just three hundred meters. Kibbutz Eyal behind us, is half a
kilometer away from Qalqilya today, in the future it will come closer to
one hundred meters. This isn’t a negligible political conflict; this is part of
a bigger battle over the future of the territories and mainly the future of C
territories, which the right wing of the government wishes to annex.
