Bet Yizhak Synagogue
100 years ago Jews from Persia, members of the Kurdish sect, immigrated
to Israel by ship. Rabbi Yizhak Kalifa and his sons were also on the ship.
Rabbi Yizhak Kalifa died at sea, on the way to Israel.
The Turkish Empire didn’t let dead people enter Israel. The immigrants
built a coffin and put the Rabbi inside. They wrote “Jerusalem the holy
city” on it and tossed it into the sea. Many years later, the people in the
community received a letter from the Jewish community in India, in which
they wrote that the coffin arrived in India!
Rabbi Yizhak’s sons built a synagogue named after the father in Nachlaot.
Even today everyone knows that the Kurdish Jews are the builders of
Jerusalem.
