The Righteous Man from Bibas

Musician David Sabo emigrated from Europe after his whole family died
in the Holocaust, and lived in Nachlaot.
He lived alone in a small one bedroom apartment with a bed and a chair.
But everyone in Nachlaot knew David.
They called him ‘playing David’ in the neighborhood, and almost all of the
neighborhood’s children studied painting and music by David’s for free.
David had a big heart - he gave to the poor even the little money he had.
David didn’t have a family, but when he died he wasn’t alone. All of the
neighborhood’s residents came to the funeral, and (they) held a Sephardic
[lit. eastern] funeral for him even though he was Ashkenazi. Because
David, the residents said, was “one of us.”
At the neighborhood’s community center on 12 Bibas Street there is a wall
with David’s paintings.
