A Quarter of a Loaf of Bread

"A cultural man, he should have a serious hobby" announced
mother, when Feivel, the little boy with [owner of] the full face
and the rosy [blushed] cheeks, turned 8 years. In Bukovina, a
Romanian area where Feivel's family lived in, there was a
marvelous conservatory. Feivel was sent there to study and play
on a violin. For the duration of three years, he learned and
progressed nicely.

"Your child is talented and persistent," praised [him] the
enthusiastic teacher to his parents, "it is worth while to invest in
him". But all this did not help little Feivel, with the round face,
when the Germans conquered his city – at least not in the
beginning. The Germans gave an order to fire immediately all
the Jewish workers (m. and f.). Businesses that were under
Jewish ownership were closed by the warrant of the Fuhrer.
Each night raids were done on homes, and men and women
were kidnapped from their homes and from their families and
were taken to camps. Also Feivel's parents stopped working.
The hunger, which became a permanent guest in the Jews'
homes in the town, threatened to knock on his family's doors.

The salvation came from an unexpected direction: a rumor got
to the Germans' ears that a Jewish boy, whose face was not so
round anymore, is wondrous in his violin playing. Feivel was
invited to play at the Nazis’. He played for them for long hours,
a few evenings a week, and they in return left his family alone
and also paid his salary with food: two loaves of round bread, a
few potatoes and a bottle of milk, and those he would bring with
him after every performance. Grocery items like these were
precious and they kept his family alive at that time.

One day affirmed knocking were heard on the door of the
family's house. Feivel's father, pale as a ghost [pale as lime],
