opened the door. Feivel, sweating and shaking, covered his face
with a blanket: surely they came to take us to the camps, the
nightmare went through [passed into] his mind [brain]. But he
was wrong. "Where is the violin?" The two Nazi soldiers yelled
when they stood at the opening. "Give us the violin!" and that's
how Feivel, his parents and his brother were left without a
livelihood. For almost two weeks Feivel did not put a piece of
food in his mouth. While holding his skinny and long face with
his hands, he laid down exhausted in his room. Suddenly a
young boy entered the house, with his bones sticking out and his
stomach swollen from hunger, and he asked to talk [to converse]
with him. When Feivel noticed him, he almost forgot his
unbearable hunger: in his hand, he immediately saw, the boy
held a violin, and not just any violin – but a very prestigious
violin, product of "Hamati".

"My brother played wonderfully, but they took him to the gas
chambers," told the very thin boy, Daniel his name, "now we are
hungry, and the violin is not helping us. I am giving you this
dear violin," announced the boy to Feivel who was excited, "and
I don’t demand (any) money for it. Only one thing I request:
when you get a loaf of bread for your playing, give me, please, a
quarter of it, so that my family and I won't die of starvation. Pay
attention," repeated Daniel his words in order to emphasize
them, "of each loaf that you get for your playing the violin,
please bring me a quarter."

Feivel continued to play the violin for the Germans' pleasure,
and after a week he got his salary, which included also a loaf of
bread. Even before he tasted a small slice, he quickly sliced [to
slice] a quarter of it and ran to bring it to Daniel's house, as he
promised. He knocked strongly and continuously on the door,
but no one answered. He did not wait and he opened the door.
