Close to Yael
Every year I wake up early on the first day of school. You have
to arrive early to school if you want to get [catch] a good seat in
the classroom. If you get a seat by the window –it's good,
because you can look outside when it's boring and see the
people on the street. And if you get a seat next to the heating –
it’s fun in the winter. But most of all I wanted to get a seat next
to Yael. Yael is the "queen of the class" and all the boys want to
sit next to her.
So I came very early, and I was able to sit wherever I
want(ed to), because nobody came yet. The classroom
was empty and it was quiet. I walked around [turned]
between the empty chairs and desks. Classrooms look
totally different when they're empty - bigger. This isn't
the same classroom we studied in last year.
I was able to choose whichever seat I wanted, but the problem
was I wasn't able to know where Yael will sit down, and Yael
was not the one who would come early. She's not like that.
Anyways, I brought three bags in order to put them on three
chairs in all kinds of different places, (and) so I could choose the
seat that will be close to Yael. If I'll have luck it could be right
next to her.
Boys and girls came in and sat down, and I had to move the
bags from one place [seat] to another. There were seats that I
knew she wouldn't sit in, for instance next to the seat that Dina
Bender sat in and Chana. They also saved a seat for Ofra. Those
are girls who nobody likes to sit next to.
I waited and waited and she didn't come. I already started
thinking that maybe she's sick and that she won't come. I
