The Templerian Cemetery
Cemeteries are supposed to be outside of the city. In Jerusalem, one
could see cemeteries inside the city as well. Why? Jerusalem is a city
that is built slowly. A cemetery inside the city, it’s a sign that once the
edge of the city was there.
Every cemetery has stories. In the Templerian cemetery on Emerk
Refaim street as well, one can find interesting stories and a lot of
history.
In the 19th century German Christians arrive in the country – the
Templers. They build settlements, houses and roads in the Land of
Israel.
It is very hard in the country in the 19th century. There are many
diseases and a lot of people die. At first the Templers bury their
friends in the cemetery on Mount Zion. Later, because of fights, they
begin burying their people in a new cemetery that they establish.
In the cemetery one can find graves of children, adults and soldiers.
The cemetery is almost always closed. In order to go in [we] must
convince nuns who don’t speak English or Hebrew to open the gate
and allow us to enter.
