Item #3 (Advanced Level)
Small but Precious
Inside (this) little box hide thousands of creatures most of us prefer not to
run into altogether, but here these spiders are part of a vast industry. After
being raised in a controlled environment they’re shipped to fields and
agricultural greenhouses. This spider is called ‘Phytoseiulus persimilis’. It
isn’t venomous or dangerous to humans, on the contrary. Every day each
one of these guzzle up about seven different insects that harm agricultural
crops. These spiders are becoming more and more common around the
world, as part of attempts to cut back on the use of toxic chemicals in
agriculture. At Sdeh Eliahu (they) raise them by the millions, and each is
carefully counted. Nowadays (they) are working on an especially big
shipment destined for rose growers in Columbia who bought six hundred
million spiders. Around the world (people) are realizing that (we) have to
cut back on the use of chemical containing pesticides, and sometimes (we)
can do that using creatures we once thought were the real pests.
