Poland or Spain?
Most Israeli high school kids pass through here; in between final exams
and the uniform, Auschwitz and Majdanek have become character building
stops. But who determined that this should be the soundtrack of these
years? Here’s a first attempt to suggest another soundtrack. Just now, a
delegation of eighteen year olds returned from an alternative teenage
journey, a journey to Spain. A week following the incredible Golden Age
that happened there, as well as the brutal Alhambra Decree. They studied
the material and guided themselves through a chapter in a history they
didn’t know so far. At the preparation meetings in Israel, and over there as
well, they dealt for the first time in their lives with the great thinkers of
that time, and the rare renaissance that took place in Spain five hundred
years ago. But the conclusions they came to there are very relevant now.
Eshel, an educantional startup man and a former senior official at the
Ministry of Education, wants this to become the alternative.
