Running the Fastest
Diana Viseman already felt it in (her) legs. An Israeli record that (has
been) standing like a wall for almost half a century – is about to fall apart.
Yesterday at the Israel Championship, with great weather and a back wind
– it happened. (The one) who waited for Diana at the end of the run was of
course the mythological record-holder, Esther Roth-Shahamorov, who
sometime in nineteen seventy two, at nineteen years old, exactly Diana’s
age today, set that record: eleven seconds and forty five hundredths. (We)
have to admit, Diana’s achievement is terrific, but for Israeli athletics – it’s
sad that an ancient record from the days when Golda Meir was Prime
Minister was broken just now. The handful of spectators and tiny crowd
that stayed for the medals ceremony didn’t contribute to the festive
atmosphere. Diana’s career is still ahead of her, next month she’ll compete
for the first time at the European Championships [for adults].
