Item #1 (Advanced Level)
A Hard Day in the South
This is how the residents surrounding Gaza opened (their) morning: more
than fifty alarms, tens of mortar bombs and the sounds of Iron Dome’s
interceptions. In less than an hour, more than thirty mortar bombs were
fired at the Gaza-surrounding settlements. School buses were stopped,
plays and trips were also cancelled, and a mortar bomb exploded in a
kindergarten courtyard. Eyal, the Kibbutz’ landscaper, was lightly
wounded by shrapnel in his shoulder and was evacuated by Magen David
Adom paramedics to the Soroka hospital. Fortunately, the mortar bomb
fell just before the arrival of children and their parents on site. The alarms
and echoes of explosions continued throughout the day. Eighty six year old
Zvi Pinko from Ein Hashlosha Kibbutz is partially deaf and can’t hear the
alarms. His dog Keeke helps and guides him to shelter. Chief of General
Staff Gadi Eizenkot came to visit the kindergarten today and met with the
region’s local officials. It seems that both he and the south’s residents
realize that as of this point, things are far from settling down.
