Item #2 (Advanced Level)
Under the Mountains of Jerusalem
A new stalactite cave was discovered in the mountains of Jerusalem this
week completely by chance, two hundred and eighty meters under the
ground. The cave was discovered during the excavation works for the fifth
water tunnel to Jerusalem, a complicated project that includes power
stations, pumps and infrastructure facilities, all in total are meant to push
water from sea level to an altitude of eight hundred and sixty meters, up to
the heart of the capital. This tunnel’s name is Yael and it’s being burrowed
these days between the village of Kisalon and Ein Kerem, at a length of
thirteen and a half kilometers. This is the second cave that was discovered
in the water project, the previous one was discovered right as works began.
But the current cave is considered to be an active cave, one where
stalactites and stalagmites are still being formed. And still, the cave will be
sealed in a month and a half, and then the burrowing of the water tunnel
will continue to the finish, or until the discovery of a new cave.
