Driving Together

Yohai Ansbacher lives in Jerusalem, but comes for meetings in Tel Aviv almost every day. He
usually drives in his private car, but it has been shut down for a while, and instead of dragging
around in public transportation, he decided to join carpooling. More and more people, mostly
young, decide to make their trip out of town with complete strangers in the same car, and this way
save on the cost of the ride. You can find countless groups on Facebook that open by destination,
with hundreds of thousands of users just looking for the next communal ride. Almost three and a
half million cars fill Israel’s roads, but less than two people per average car. As long as the public
transportation in Israel doesn’t really provide a proper answer, it seems that both drivers and
passengers realize they have to take care of themselves. (Those) who would definitely attest to the
advantages of carpooling are Naomi and Natan Roshansky who were married just two months ago
after sharing a seat on a ride to Tel Aviv. The carpool trend is gaining momentum in the world, in
Israel it’s still (lagging) behind. Meanwhile more and more private initiatives emerge, which might
even slightly lighten the travel costs and traffic congestion. What’s certain is that (you) can at least
find new friends along the way.
