Haifa Chemicals
After weeks of uncertainty, more than eight hundred Haifa Chemicals
Company employees received a notice of dismissal today. Many of them
in the north and in the south decided to protest, and since this morning are
barricading in factory gates, burning tires and blaming management and
the country, which they claim abandoned them. A few weeks ago the court
came to a final decision that the ammonia silo endangers the Haifa bay
residents and must be closed down. Since then deliberations have been
held about how (they) will import ammonia to Israel. Haifa Chemicals
insist on transporting ammonia via a permanent ship that will dock at
Haifa port, the state and Haifa municipality on their part, insist on safer
alternatives. In the meantime, it seems, the announcement by Haifa
Chemical owners about closing the plant down is mostly meant to put
pressure on decision makers. In the middle remain hundreds of employees
who don’t know what their future will be.
