The British History of the Russian Compound
In 1917, when the British occupied Jerusalem, they turned an eye to
the Russian Compound and turned it into the center of the British
rule in Israel and so established in the Russian Compound:
1. The headquarters of the British police
2. The office of the British secret police
3. The British courthouse
4. The central prison of Israel
The prison was established inside the hostel of the Russian women
and in order to turn it into a prison the English added barbed-wire
fences on the roofs and around the prison.
In this prison the English imprisoned criminals of all kinds:
murderers, robbers, thieves and also illegal Jewish immigrants and
political groups that opposed the British rule. Most of the political
prisoners in the prison were Jews. And in this small prison the British
squeezed more than 550 prisoners in horrible conditions, without air
or food.
Great Britain had more prisons in Israel: in Acco, in Beit Lechem
and more, and the British also established camps for forced labor in
Atlit and in other places.
