The Escape from the Prison
In February 1948, 12 prisoners escaped from the prison. They built a
tunnel and escaped via the sewer. There were several stages in the
escape:
First of all, a Jewish municipal worker gave the prisoners a map of
the sewer.
Afterwards, the prisoners built a tunnel from the room to the sewer.
At the same time, the friends of the prisoners smuggled into the
prison a camera in order to forge new documents for the prisoners.
When the tunnel was ready, the Jewish municipal worker clogged the
sewer and brought Jewish workmen to fix it. The Jewish workmen
brought with them workmen's clothes for the prisoners.
The prisoners entered the tunnel and from there the sewer. In the
sewer, they put on the clothes of the workmen and went out on the
other side of the sewer.
If you would escape from prison, what is the first thing that you
would do outside? Visit the family at home? Drink coffee with
friends? Sleep in your bed?
Maybe. But that is not what the prisoners did.
In Israel there was a hard war, and all of the prisoners escaped in
order to fight. After years in prison, and without taking a day of
vacation, they joined their friends that fought for the State.
