Shalom-Meir Tower and Gymnasia Herzliya
In the 60ies, Tel-Aviv municipality decided to build the highest tower
in the Middle East – Meir Shalom tower. It was decided to establish the
tower instead of the old building of Gymnasia Herzliya. That is,
destroying the Gymnasia, and on its ruins build the new tower.
In 1965, the construction of the tower, which rose to the height of 142
meters and 34 floors, was completed. The tower fulfilled its purpose
and indeed, at the time, it was the highest building in the Middle East
and even the highest one in Asia and Africa. People from all over the
world came to watch the architectural achievement, go up to its top
floor and watch the city and the sea. Many people also arrive in order to
dine at the highest restaurant in the Middle East, which was located in
the tower itself. There were also people who decided to seize the
opportunity, being it the highest building, and jumped off it, just
because they were fed up.
The building that was destroyed in order to build the tower was
Gymnasia Herzliya school. It was the first Hebrew school. Studies were
held there in Hebrew only, a thing which was out of the ordinary at the
period of the beginning of the Jewish settlement in Israel. However, it
was not just the studies in the Hebrew language that made the
