Ahuzat-Bait
Arie Akiva Weiss is one of the founders of the city of Tel-Aviv. He
studied architecture in Europe and arrived at Israel with a new vision:
to build a modern Hebrew city in Israel. The Jews who live in Jaffa
embraced Weiss's idea and decided to start building the first
neighborhood next to Neve-Tzedek. The new neighborhood was called
at the time "Ahuzat Bait".
After a few years, Weiss had a daughter – the first baby of Tel-Aviv.
He loved the new city so much that he decided to call his daughter
"Ahuzbait". With a name like that people won't forget who you are.
On the neighborhood there are two main streets: Rothschild Street and
Herzel Street. On Herzel Street there is the first Hebrew school –
"Gymnasia Herzliya". The school is the most important place in the
neighborhood and a source of pride to the residents because in Ahuzat
Bait the education and culture were very important. Rothschild Street is
the main boulevard in the neighborhood. It is a wide boulevard, with
benches and tress, as well as a kiosk that sells lemonade. Rothschild is
the first street in which the Tel-Avivian 'back in the days' atmosphere
was created: to stroll along the boulevard and afterwards sit on one of
the shaded benches with a glass of cold lemonade and talk for hours
about politics, love, philosophy or anything else.
On Rothschild Street, there used to be a big water tower that provided
water for all the residents in the neighborhood. Inside the tower, there
