                         Leaving Amona

After all the postponements, agreements, threats and promises, Amona’s
moment of truth is coming. The ring around the settlement tightens,
literally, as tractors and heavy machinery make their way to it, and army
and police forces block access to it today. Passage is only allowed for
residents, and even they were already issued a General’s order telling them
to evacuate in forty eight hours. At noon a flow, perhaps a drip, of several
dozen teenagers began, and in total about two hundred additional activists
joined the residents. The evacuation is a done deal, but the residents’ fate
is still questionable, and so all day (they) followed what’s happening at the
Supreme Court here. Justices are expected to decide whether to cancel the
agreement between the government and the residents following a petition
by the Yesh Din organization, in which (they) claim that the alternative
plots promised to the settlers belong to Palestinians as well. This decision
will obviously also have an effect on the intensity of the resistance at the
evacuation, even though the residents have already committed to a
peaceful evacuation. Here in the room there’s a lot of criticism and anger
at the right-wing government that eventually failed to keep them on the
mountain, as well as differences of opinion how to behave at the end –
whether to stand by the commitment to a peaceful evacuation, or break all
the rules.
