Eilat for the Rich
The southern coastal strip has always served as a camping site. Tents,
sleeping on the beach, free camping for anyone who wants it. Thousands
of families and children, youngsters for whom hotels are too expensive and
(those) who prefer a different kind of vacation, flock here – mostly on
weekends and holidays. Now, a moment before Pesach, Mayor Meir
Yizhak-Halevi decided to ban setting up tents and (anyone) who violates
the rule gets a fine of seven hundred and thirty NIS. "They took all the
beaches in Israel away from us, every beach I go to – grows smaller, even
this beach grew smaller. (Only) the last corner close to the border with
Sinai is left, and they took that too. Eilat became a city for the rich only.”
And so, under the patronage of the city, instead of a free vacation for all of
Israel, mobile home owners rent them as hotels and B&Bs on the
waterline, and in practice took over the beach. The meaning (of this) to
vacationers’ pockets is obvious. The mayor’s decision creates a protest by
many vacationers who intended on coming to the city over the holiday.
