Walter Katz’ House
Walter Katz arrived in Israel from Germany in [the year of] 1938. He
arrived in Israel with no money, but brought with him materials to
build a house (with). Walter built a simple but strong house on
Palmach St.
Because the house was strong and in an important place, it was a front
post against the Arab armies in the War of Independence in [the year
of] 1948.
The municipality decided that Walter Katz’ house is a historic
preservation building and (people are) not allowed to demolish it. But
a few years ago, one of the contractors in Jerusalem wanted to build a
new house instead of Walter Katz’. In the petition to the court (he)
wrote that it should be demolished because “(they) built it from Nazi
materials.” The court granted the request. The contractor demolished
the house and built a big, new, modern house in its place, which is
very different than all the simple houses in the street.
