Introduction

The twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alphabet constitute the
powerful spiritual energy that God used in the work of
Creation. In other words, when the commandment Let there
be light, and there was light…; Let there be firmament in the
midst of the waters…; Let there be lights in the firmament…,
were uttered, God combined and transposed the individual letters of the Hebrew
alphabet, making them the "bricks" of Creation that translated Divine will in to
reality.

We can make this concept clearer by noting that the Hebrew word davar means
both "word" and "thing": the same term for "thing" is used for the "word" that
created the thing, implying that the thing is, in essence, the word that was used to
create it. The study of the inner meanings of words and the creative power of the
letters is at the heart of the Jewish esoteric tradition, Kabbalah.
