Israeli Rally
It seems that this is the classic situation to use “Let another man praise
thee.” Sela, not even eighteen yet, won on a KTM the motorcycle category
in a rally that recreates the mythological Dakar. From Monaco, Morocco,
Mauritania, and up to Dakar, Senegal. A winner? He just wanted to get
back home in peace. “I just wanted to come and improve, get to know the
navigation more. First time in Africa, in the dunes, I didn’t even think of
winning this race.” It’s an exhausting rally; six, seven, eight hours (of)
riding every day for two weeks, when (your) body’s already aching and
saying enough, mostly in the Sahara’s incredible, nightmarish vast sea of
sands. “The really difficult moments are in Mauritania’s sands, you drive
through the dunes, they’re endless, (you) have to be really focused,
because every little mistake can cost you a horrible fall.” The big
manufacturers are already courting the new star, but in a few weeks, Gev,
who could have been an honor athlete, will give it up for a combat service
in the IDF. So in the meantime there are Israeli athletes who are bringing
(in) international titles. Maybe sometime there would also be Israeli motor
sports, here by us.
