A Letter That David, an Immigrant From Ethiopia,
Writes To His Wife Bat-Sheva
David is a new immigrant from Ethiopia. He writes to his wife, Bat-Sheva,
about Jerusalem:
"Bat-Sheva, I do not have enough words in order to tell you how much I love
Jerusalem.
Do you understand? For me, Jerusalem is not just a city. For me, Jerusalem is
a dream, it is life.
When I was a child in Ethiopia, I always wanted to reach Jerusalem. It was my
biggest dream: to reach Jerusalem, to see the Temple and to meet King David.
I did not know at all that there is no longer a Temple and that King David
already died.
The way to Jerusalem from Ethiopia was very hard, and the whole way I was
sick. But all the time I thought: 'It's okay… Eliyahu (Elijah) the Prophet lives
in Jerusalem… he is better than a doctor, and he will help me to feel well…'
When I reached Jerusalem, I was disappointed.
Do you understand? In Ethiopia they told us about a city of gold, with a wall
of fire and light. And when I reached Jerusalem – I saw that the whole city was
built of stones, only stones, that Eliyahu and David are already dead, and that
there is not a Temple at all.
It took me time to understand that also without a Temple, without Eliyahu and
without David – Jerusalem is a special city.
True, the city is built of stones and not of gold, but in every stone in Jerusalem
there is light and history.
When I was a child, my dream was to reach Jerusalem.
Now, when I am already in Jerusalem, I dream about a son, my son and yours.
I dream to call our son Shlomo (Solomon), and that he will build the third
Temple from the stones of Jerusalem."
