A Letter That David, an Immigrant From Ethiopia,
Writes To His Wife Bat-Sheva
David is a new immigrant from Ethiopia. He writes to his wife, Bat-Sheva,
about Jerusalem:
"Bat-Sheva, I do not have enough words in order to tell you how much I love
Jerusalem.
Do you understand? For me, Jerusalem is not just a city. For me, Jerusalem is
a dream, it is life.
When I remember how I, a child in Ethiopia, would dream about Jerusalem,
want to come to Jerusalem, to meet King David, to see the Temple, sure that
Jerusalem had a wall of fire and light.
You know, the way to Jerusalem from Ethiopia is very hard. The whole way I
was sick. But I would say: 'It's okay… Eliyahu (Elijah) the Prophet lives in
Jerusalem… he is better than a doctor, he can help me to feel well…'
At the beginning, it was hard in Jerusalem. It was hard to see that there is no
Temple, no wall of fire and light, that Eliyahu and David are not there.
But today I understand that also without a Temple, without Eliyahu and without
David – Jerusalem is a special city.
In every stone in Jerusalem there is light and history.
I want to call our son Shlomo (Solomon). I think that Shlomo our son can build
the third Temple from the stones of Jerusalem."
