Herbert Samuel – First British Commissioner
In 1917 the British rule in Israel starts. The British place commissioners in
Israel, and they manage everything here. The first British Commissioner is
Herbert Samuel.
Herbert Samuel is a Jew, and the Jews in England and in Israel are very
happy that he is the Commissioner. After more than two thousand years that
there is no Jewish king in Israel – there is a Jewish Commissioner! People
feel that the redemption is starting.
On his first Shabbat in Israel, the British Commissioner prays at a synagogue
in the Old City.
It is a special Shabbat – Shabbat "Nachamu" (consolation) – the week after
Tisha B'Av. In the portion from the Prophets for Shabbat Nachamu, G-d
promises the Jews that He wants to build the Third Temple.
After the portion from the Prophets, they say: "on his throne will not sit a
foreigner." With these words, G-d promises the Jews a Jewish king, and not
a foreign king.
Herbert Samuel reads the portion from the Prophets and also the words "on
his throne will not sit a foreigner."
The Jews that pray in the synagogue are moved to hear Herbert Samuel read.
They feel that this is a sign: the Jewish Commissioner is reading about G-d
promising to build the Temple and to place a Jewish king upon Israel.
Herbert Samuel is also very moved. After several years, he says: "Never in
my life was I moved like on Shabbat Nachamu in the synagogue in
Jerusalem."
