Women in the Military
The news of nominating the first (female) squadron commander in the IDF
was a day of joy for the supporters of equality in the military, but also a
disastrous day for the leaders of the national-Charedi sect of religious
Zionism. A row of former military senior officials alongside women’s
organizations stood against the national-Charedi struggle against
integrating women in combat units, as well as the leader of The Jewish
Home, “I completely reject any call not to enlist to the IDF and this rude
call to fire the Chief of General Staff Gadi Eizenkot. But (you) have to
know that these calls really stem from honest, but mistaken anxiety.” Five
hours after these words by Minister Bennett, the response of Prime
Minister Netanyahu came from India: not only will I not condemn the
Chief of Staff, said Netanyahu, I praise him and the Air Force Commander
and expect more nominations like this. The IDF isn’t affected by the
criticism and say that they’ll continue to act to integrate women into
combat positions. As much as this trend continues, so the intensity of the
Rabbis’ response will increase.
