The Evelina School-Part 1
Evelina was a school for girls that was established by the French Rothschilds
in 1845. The Rothschild family wanted to give girls in Israel the opportunity
to get a good education. Despite the good intentions of the Rothschild family,
studies for the girls were not a high priority. If the girl was needed to help at
home she didn't go to school. In the first years of the school, the level of
learning was low and the school was called a babysitter more than a school.
A Dramatic Change Occurs in the Personality of the School
In the first years, when the school administration was in the hands of the
Rothschild family, classes were taught in French, but in 1899 the
administration changed hands and with it the language of study. In 1899
Hannah Yehudit Landau, who was known as Miss Landau, became the
principal of the school. Miss Landau had a broad education, she had much
experience in education, and she knew many important people in the city. She
was a strong woman, unmarried (quite unusual for the time) and was very
strict with the students because she wanted to provide them with a high-level
European-style education.
