The Evelina School-Part 2
Miss Landau decided that the language in the kindergarten would be Hebrew.
In the school itself she decided to teach in both Hebrew and English because
she felt that science subjects could not be taught in Hebrew. When Eliezer
ben Yehuda heard that there was a school that taught in Hebrew, he sent his
son Itamar to learn there even though it was a school for girls.
Non-Zionistic Educational Ideology
Miss Landau didn't feel connected to the ideology of Zionism. She felt
connected only to the ideology of Britain. Therefore, when the Hatikva was
sung at school ceremonies she declined to stand. She always flew the flag of
Britain and not the flags of Zionism. Many people were angry at her because
of this.
Under Miss Landau's administration, the education level at the school reached
new heights. Miss Landau ran the school with a firm hand and all the girls
left enriched and well-educated. They all cherished Miss Landau and her
unique educational methods.
During the First World War, the Turks expelled the school principal from the
land of Israel because she refused to give up her British citizenship.
