The Lemel School- Part 1
The Lemel School was founded in 1903 by Jews of German origin
from the group Ezra (not to be confused with the Prophet Ezra
whose name is spelled differently. Here Ezra means "aid"). They
taught in German. The school was considered modern and taught
many subjects such as Judaism, languages, art, and gymnastics.
Students came from all over Israel to learn at the prestigious
school. Rabbis in Israel denounced the school because, to them,
the teachings in the school were a true Denigration of G-d.
In 1914 there was a "confrontation of languages" and the Lemel
School found itself in the center of the storm. The students and
younger teachers who wanted to study in Hebrew went up against
veteran teachers in the school who spoke and taught in German.
The rebellion was begun by the assistant principal David Yellin,
the paradigmatic educator who later on would develop his own
method of teaching. He opposed the principal, Ephraim Cohen
Reiss, who had decided that they needed to continue teaching all
the subjects in German.
The rebellion began on the birthday of King Wilhelm of Prussia.
Throughout the school, German flags were hung. Among them
wasn't a single flag of Zionism.
