                                      A Doughnut for Hanukah
Hanukah is a holiday when you have to host, come… who doesn’t invite
people to light a candle? And you don’t just have to host them, you have to
make doughnuts yourself too. I always make those simple little yoghurt
doughnuts, and I really have (to make) a little confession – it turns out
horrible. Really, they each grow independently. Now me, whenever
something doesn’t come out right with food, I always tell the kids, “oh,
sorry, this is how it’s supposed to be, this is the recipe.” The cake got burned
            – this is how it’s supposed to be. The baked pasta got stuck together – this
is how it’s supposed to be. And then my perfect sister in law, who also made
doughnuts, shows up with a tray of fluffy, perky, standing upright, round
uniform doughnuts with powdered sugar like snow, with organic strawberry
jam she made herself from strawberries she picked at the Golan on Saturday,
next to which my doughnuts look like the special needs class of doughnuts.
And then my kids tell me, “You see mom? This is how it’s supposed to be!”
want to impress on Hanukah? Get a tipuzina for cheese dreidels, not my
            invention.
