Alcatraz Triathlon
We have not yet calmed down from the many medals at the Olympics and
now we have another especially surprising one. Haim Gopher came in
second at the finish line of one of the toughest triathlon competitions in
the world, outside the infamous Alcatraz prison in San Francisco Bay. But
Gopher is not alone, this is a relay triathlon competition. Alongside
Gopher, Eran Levy competed on the bike and Uri Nitzan in the swimming
competition in San Francisco Bay’s cold water. "The Escape from
Alcatraz" is what this tough triathlon competition is called. When the
prison was active, quite a few inmates tried to escape by swimming,
without success. The Israeli achievement, the conquest of the second place
out of hundreds of teams that participated in the competition, left a great
impression on the locals. Ahead of the competition, the three gathered for
half a year of grueling training - Uri in a two-and-a-half-kilometer swim,
Eran in a thirty-kilometer bike ride and Gopher finished with a twelve-
kilometer run. The three friends already know [each other] from the army,
from the paratroopers' patrol. This is the fortieth year of the Alcatraz
Triathlon, the threatening prison has long been inactive, and now it is
possible to check off another item (lit. mark another V) for the Israeli flag.
