The British Occupation

Until1917 the Turks ruled in the land of Israel. The Turkish rule was
hard for the Jews and the Arabs. The Turks were cruel and all the people
in the land of Israel were very happy when the British arrived in the
land in 1917.
The British wrote the Balfour Declaration and there they wrote: "A
Jewish home should be built for the Jewish people in the land of Israel,"
but the Arabs in the land of Israel became very angry and pressured the
English to annul the Balfour Declaration. The Arabs also killed many
Jews in Jerusalem and Hebron. Then the English wrote the "White
Paper" and in it they wrote that it is prohibited for Jews to immigrate to
the land of Israel. All the Jews who fled from the Nazis in Europe could
not come to Israel. The Jews started a partisan war in the land of Israel.
There were three big underground movements that fought the English:
"The Hagana" ("The Defense"), "Etsel" (acronym for "National
Military Organization"), and "Lekhi" (acronym for "Israel Freedom
Fighters"). Many of the Jews who were in these underground
movements were caught and entered the prison in the Russian
Compound.
