But the yekkes also introduced some refreshing innovations. Two such were
electricity in the homes and a private bus line, which the neighborhood council
initiated. At the time, Rechavia was too far from Geulah, the central neighborhood
outside the walls, to walk. So they needed a neighborhood bus line. The buses
were small, holding no more than 15 passengers. The contract with the bus owner
read, "…The owner of the bus has deposited 25 Egyptian Lira to ensure that the bus
will follow the agreed-upon schedule with precise punctuality; and that he will
make sure that it is clean, well-maintained, and comfortable to sit in."
As early as 1923, the "Palestine Land Development Company" sold a plot of land in
Rechavia for 23 grushim (0.01 shekels) per square "ama" (about one square foot).
This was at a time when land in Talpiot could be bought for 12 grushim and in
Mekor Baruch for five grushim. Today, land in Rechavia is among the most
expensive real estate in Israel.
