made it both his office and his private residence.
Mendelsohn, who had designed the Einstein Tower and other important locations in
Germany, designed Hadassah Hospital on Mount Scopus in Jerusalem, Rambam
Hospital in Haifa, the Chaim Weitzman House at the Weitzman Institute and other
buildings.
In the 1940's, after the outbreak of World War Two, the extent of Mendelsohn's
business decreased dramatically. As Rommel's army advanced in North Africa,
Mendelsohn's wife, Aliza, said they hadn't escaped from Hitler's fury in Germany
only to fall prey to it in Palestine. So they moved to the United States where
Mendelsohn died in 1953.
After the Mendelsohns moved to America, the windmill went from hand to hand
until the early 1970's when a building contractor bought it. He intended on tearing
it down and building a four-storey residential building in its place. The builder
succeeded in obtaining a demolition order but, at the last minute, an organization of
architects formulated a plan to save the windmill. The windmill would not be torn
down; rather it would be renovated and preserved as a shopping center. That is
why, to this day, we see a number of stores in the windmill. It is no longer active as
a windmill but it stands as a reminder of a different time.
