                   Residents in Rural Areas

Doctor Shany Kaptson, thirty four years old, left Herzliya and moved to
the Negev’s capitol, Be’er Sheva, in order to do her residency at the
Soroka hospital. According to the agreement signed with the doctors five
years ago, she was supposed to get a grant of three hundred thousand NIS,
since she chose to do her residency at a rural hospital. Dr. Kaptson is a
prominent, excelling physician, who chose an especially hard residency –
cardio-thoracic surgery. Promising young doctors like her are exactly the
ones the country wants to bring to rural areas. And this plan did indeed
work; about one thousand eight hundred doctors who chose to do their
residency in rural areas and required professions since the year two
thousand eleven, really strengthened medicine in rural areas. But the
government decided to cancel these grants next year, so Dr. Kaptson
probably won’t get the grant she deserves. “There’s no doubt that this
grant was supposed to help me, as someone who left her support systems,
her family, her friends.” Last year too was an attempt by the government
to cancel these grants, an attempt that was foiled at the last minute by
Knesset Member Orly Levy-Abekasis, who is fighting the decision to
cancel the grants this year as well. The government committed to these
grants up to the year twenty twenty.
