                    Our People down South

While around the government table (they’re) conducting losers-winners
wars over the State Comptroller’s report, the Gaza-surrounding residents
are having their private daily battle (against) the tunnel threat. Even two
and a half years after Protective Edge, every drill noise, every tractor
digging in the ground beyond the fence, immediately turns into a potential
threat. Security agencies have been working nonstop for the past two and a
half years in an attempt to locate tunnels on Israeli ground, and
simultaneously develop a technological answer to this threat. In the report,
the comptroller states that, “In light of the tunnel threat being a strategic
threat, and in light of the IDF’s limited ability to locate assault tunnels
penetrating our turf, it would have been expected of security agencies to
actually increase the defense (given) to the Gaza-surrounding settlements,
by keeping the security components in the Gaza-surrounding settlements
and increasing them.” Still today, two and a half years later, things haven’t
changed. The IDF explains to residents that the local defense is less
effective, and that the peripheral strategy given to settlements today by
those soldiers scattered inside the settlements near the fence is much more
effective than soldiers sitting at the main entrance. And despite everything,
residents have stayed here, and they don’t intend on going anywhere.
Since the completion of operation Protective Edge the number of residents
in the (Gaza)-surrounding is only increasing. And today another new
neighborhood was inaugurated in Kibbutz Erez on the strip’s border, a
neighborhood that would draw forty new families to the Gaza-surrounding
settlements.
