Dizengoff's Chamber

Meir Dizengoff was born in Russia on 1861. When he was 44
years old, he immigrated with his wife Tzina to Israel and joined
the "Ahuzat Bayit" [homestead] association. In 1911, he was the
head of the association and when Ahuzat Bayit became the city
of Tel-Aviv, he became Tel-Aviv's first mayor.
As mayor, Dizengoff loved the city and nurtured it. He helped in
the construction of new houses and invested in the city's culture.
Every day he used to pass through the city's streets riding his
horse, to see that everything was alright.
This room was Dizegoff's chamber. Here he used to work, meet
with important people and think about what is best for the city
and its residents.
Here important meetings of the city members and visits of
dignitaries took place: Ehad Haam, Bialik and British
politicians.
We can see his hat and coat, the documents that are written in
his own handwriting, official stamps, and photos of personages
who came to visit the city, such as King George, Queen
Elizabeth, Churchill, and Albert Einstein. There is also a big old
map of Tel-Aviv from that period.
Tel-Aviv used to be small, but today it is the second largest city
in Israel.
