Talking to People

“I ride the train a lot, and there’s a feeling of alienation between people,
and I feel it’s a huge miss. I feel something needs to happen here, that we
need to converse. (For) more than two years I have this bug in my head
that every day goes ‘Gefen, nice to meet you, Gefen, nice to meet you, you
have to do something on the train’.” So many people sitting in one car,
talking and talking, but not to each other. Gefen, nineteen years old, is
even willing to face awkward situations to make them communicate. But
when we were with him, most of them were actually happy that someone
is saving them from the silence or the screen. Gefen’s idea, apparently, has
already been tried around the world in various ways. There are people who
made whole cars sing, there are those who ‘infected’ dozens of passengers
with a contagious laughter. Gefen is spreading the booklets he planned,
designed and printed at his own expense via Facebook. Next year he’ll
enlist to the military, but even then he won’t stop until he reaches his goal,
“I really want that there will be one car on each train that would be defined
as a conversation car, that people will come and converse on it and meet
new people.”
