The Khan Theatre
The Khan theatre is located in an original building of a Turkish khan.
A khan is a hotel for caravans, in Turkish. There are usually two
floors at a khan: a first floor for the guests’ horses, donkeys and
camels, and the second floor – a place to sleep for the guests, who
slept on the floor.
During the Turkish era (the Ottoman rule), the Jerusalem khan was
used as a hotel for Christian pilgrims who came to Bethlehem and for
Jews who came to Rachel's tomb and Hebron.
Nowadays the khan is used as a repertoire theatre. The theatre was
established in 1968, initiated by Teddy Kolek.
During the year the theatre showcases original plays and hosts special
festivals.
The theatre’s courtyard has a coffee shop and in the summer it’s nice
to sit there and feel a bit like (one is) in the Turkish era.
