                       Israeli Photographs

At any age, to any place, David Rubinger always took his old Leica
camera, to which he remained true. He was born ninety two years ago in
Vienna, and (his) career took off when he was appointed to be the
cameraman for the weekly magazine “Ha’olam Haze”. In (nineteen)
seventy he became a permanent photographer for the prestigious weekly
magazine Time, where he worked to the age of eighty six. Still before that,
he started telling the story of the state of Israel with his little camera. They
gave themselves to him: Ben Gurion with Kissinger, Golda, Begin with
Carter, and most special of all were the personal photos that were just his:
Dayan and Rabin pretending to be asleep, Shimon Peres in shorts, Arik
Sharon and Lily in the kitchen. Once, he documented Begin fixing his wife
Aliza’s shoe. He had the quality any photographer craves: just knowing to
be in the right place, at the right time. He photographed the festivities in
Jerusalem after the declaration of independence on November 29th, his
wife Anny’s, may she rest in peace, favorite photo was of a boy, a new
immigrant, blind, studying the map of Israel with his fingers. But what is
his most famous photograph? There’s no question (about it). These are the
paratroopers who conquered the Western Wall in the Six Day War, today.
Everyone who’s ever met David Rubinger tells of a nice, modest man,
with a charming smile.
