                    Riding with no Excuses

They’re everywhere. The electric bicycles are going at massive speed, on
sidewalks, endangering themselves and those around them. By law,
cyclists have to ride on the road rather than the sidewalk, and at a speed no
higher than twenty-five km/h. According to police data, the most enforced
violations are riding on a sidewalk, riding on a crosswalk instead of
walking, riding children under the age of eight, riding without a helmet
and using the phone while riding. The fine on this common violation,
riding on the sidewalk, is one hundred NIS, and the excuses are especially
creative, “I was riding on the road here, came back from there, I was
coming… coming to you to ask you something!” In two thousand sixteen
up until now six thousand six hundred and seventy tickets for electric
bicycle riders have been registered, compared to two thousand one
hundred and seventy seven tickets last year – three times over. Over the
past three months the most significant enforcing was in Tel Aviv, where
eight hundred and thirty five tickets were given. Soon this enforcing is
expected to expand.
