Yossi Banai - Advanced Level
Yossi Banai & friends
In Yossi Banai’s house there were no toys or books. Yossi played in
the streets.
He would stand in the street and act out stories that his siblings would
tell at home. In the streets he would walk with his two best friends:
Simon and Little Mo’iz.
On King George Street and Jaffa Road there were many bakeries.
Yossi, Simon and Little Mo’iz often stood outside of them and looked
at the cakes but they did not have money to buy any.
One day the seller said to them, “Today you can choose what you
want”.
The children said, "Thanks, but we're not hungry" and left the store.
They were happy that they did not eat for free.
Yossi attended the Alliance school on Jaffa Street where studies were
free. He did not like the school and would often run away from there.
Finally, he graduated from the school and just taught himself. During
military service he studied in an acting studio, and later got accepted
to the HaBima theater company. During his mid-twenties Yossi quit
HaBima because he wanted to become an independent actor. He went
to Paris where he was influenced by French culture and especially
chansons. He loved to go hear George Brassens. He said he liked to
listen to him because Brassens doesn’t sing – he tells stories. Yossi
Banai doesn’t sing – he tells a story with music.
