What are Israeli Students Good at?
At the Ministry of Education (they) celebrated this morning, increases
were shown in five of nine efficiency tests. “I can announce (you) today:
the strong got stronger, and the weak got even stronger.” The most
impressive improvement was shown in science among eighth graders, an
increase of twenty three points. In math an increase of twelve points
among fifth graders. In all classes gaps between Hebrew and Arabic
speakers were narrowed. In math among eighth graders the gap was
narrowed by sixteen points, in science and technology by fourteen points,
and in English the gap was narrowed by nine points. Still, gaps grew
bigger between students of a high socio-economic status and students of
low status. Asides from academic achievements, the efficiency tests also
look into school atmosphere, questions on boycotting, violence and
schoolwork overload. Here is the less encouraging part of the report. So
maybe we’re getting better in science, English and math, but not on
behavior.
