E-Toneā„¢: Ulpan-Or Weekly News Digest

                                           Item #1 (Advanced Level)

               Because of the Inspector General

(People) around Inspector General Alsheikh are talking today as if about a
Tsunami that no one saw coming. The public turmoil started last night
when the Inspector General Alsheikh was asked during the course of his
speech at the lawyers' Bar Association convention about the police's
conduct with suspects from the Ethiopian community. "In all
criminological studies around the world it (has been) proven that
immigrants are more involved in crime than others, I think this shouldn't
surprise (us)." These words by Inspector General Alsheikh brought on a
wave of angry reactions and harsh personal criticism. The Inspector
General devoted many hours last night to talks with activists and Knesset
Members, in an attempt to explain what he meant and why his words were
misunderstood. As convincing as (his) explanations may be,
representatives of the Ethiopian community have a hard time accepting
them today. The main burden will remain on his shoulders - proving that
something really has changed in the police's conduct with Ethiopian
Israelis.
