need. This is a closed economy, which has to be supervised by the
country".
But this closed economy was opened over twenty years ago. Mey Eden
was the first company to fill bottles with water and sell them to
consumers. Mey Eden and the other water companies were classified as
an "Industrial Factory", even though they claim themselves that the water
is sold natural, as is, without any processing or treatment.
"Unlike other factories and what is required by law, the water companies
don't use the water for industrial needs, but take the precious resource and
sell it, as is, to the public", the petition says.
According to the petitioners' estimations, Israel's water companies make
about a billion Shekels a year, and the mineral water is being sold for a
price which is up to a thousand times higher than what the mineral water
companies pay for it.
Comments
The water companies are seemingly keeping their comments for court. In
the meantime, they are studying the petition and preparing. Uri Shor, the
water authority's spokesperson, said that "the companies meet the
required definitions for industrial allocations, much like all of the soft
drinks companies do".
