Item #3 (Advanced Level)
There’s Room for Everyone
When you ask the kindergarten teachers here what’s special about their
kindergarten they say that it’s like a building – each one is different, there
are religious and secular (people), black-haired and blonds, and there are
also children with special needs. Usually in the education system there are
two options: either special education, or singular integration where one
child with special needs is integrated into a regular kindergarten, but here
everyone lives together. There are eight children here with complex
physiological problems, some of them have rare syndromes, none of them
speak, they’re surrounded by devices. But all of this doesn’t bother the
dozens of other children to accept them exactly the way they are. “The
kids are naturally curious kids, they always ask questions, “Why can’t a
six year old speak?”, I tell them that these children were born this way, and
they have a lot of other ways to communicate, even if they don’t have the
regular language we’re used to communicating with.” Everyone doesn’t
always play together here, there are also completely separate activities, but
what they learned here in their common time, they’ll probably take with
them for their whole lives.
